Yesterday a skier triggered a 2 to 5 foot deep hardslab in a very steep, unskied area south of the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. Surface slabs one to three feet in depth and deeper hard slabs up to five feet will become more susceptible to failure as the day warms. In addition, any extended periods of sunshine, particularly in cirques and basins that concentrate the sun’s energy, could weaken the snow surface and allow for the possibility of pinwheels, wet loose sloughs, and cornice drops. Backcountry travelers need to pay attention to the amount of heating, and adjust their plans accordingly if signs of significant warming are observed.
