Avalanche Center Incidents Updated

The Incidents section of Avalanche-Center.org has been kept reasonable up to date so far. Due to the updates there time for other things has been in short supply. There are many news stories for some of the higher profile incidents and those are sorted through to add the most insightful ones to the files in the Incidents section. Incidents not added there which appear in the news are sometimes included in this list mail. In theory we have a list to update additions to the Incidents but so far it has only two subscribers and time to promote it or use it has not yet been possible.

One reason for a late start is that work on last seasons fatal incidents book was delayed. That was just recently completed and is available on Amazon or on the website for members. See the main Incident section page for reports and a link to the book. (Or log into the site if you are a member.)

Scotland's avalanche season In pictures

It is almost a month since the start of Scotland's latest avalanche season, and teams of forecasters have been battered by wind and rain in their hunt for the potentially fatal hazard. Six mountain areas - Lochaber, Glen Coe, Creag Meagaidh, Torridon and Northern and Southern Cairngorms - are monitored for the risk from between mid-December to mid-April. Teams of forecasters have encountered a mixed bag of weather conditions this season so far.

December was mild, wet and windy but in more recent days snow has been falling heavily over the summits. Eleven avalanches have been recorded so far. There were 171 last season, most of them occurring naturally. But 17 were triggered by human activity such as walking or skiing and a total of 34 people were caught up in the slides, according to SAIS's 2023-24 annual report. SAIS said 13 people were carried a significant distances by avalanches. Fortunately, there were no fatalities.

Amazing Roof Avalanche Video (Kentucky)

A Kentucky woman on a smoke break captured a mini-avalanche on camera after she heard ice cracking on the roof of her workplace. Candice Weizel told Storyful that she usually stands in the glass enclosure seen in the video when she is taking a break from her job at Chewy.com in Louisville.

However, on January 7, she thought she would be better off standing in the parking lot after she “heard the cracking of the ice.” She added that 30 minutes before the snow fell, the same thing had happened on a different side of the building, so she was ready to film the wintry cascade.
