In a preemptive response to expected severe weather conditions, Washington State has announced the seasonal closure of State Route 20, the North Cascades Highway, effective 6 pm Thursday. This decision comes as a safety measure due to the high risk of avalanches triggered by the forecasted combination of heavy snowfall followed by rain. The reopening of the highway is scheduled for spring, contingent upon weather conditions and the completion of necessary maintenance and safety checks.

Four skiers caught in an avalanche near Marble Peak on Saturday escaped without any serious injuries. A group of nine backcountry skiers and snowboarders intended to ski north-facing slopes on Raspberry Ridge near Marble when one of the skiers triggered an avalanche while descending the slope. Three skiers had successfully descended the slope and waited at the bottom when a fourth skier triggered the avalanche and was carried and partially buried in the snow.

Early season intermittent snow has resulted in an increased risk of avalanches in Colorado's high country, with 51 slides reported between November 20 and November 26. At least four of these slides were human triggered, with people getting caught in those slides. No deaths or serious injuries have been reported. Most of the 51 slides reported over the past week have been on the smaller side.

Nov 28, 2023: Please be advised that the Mountain Rescue Service has issued a warning about the increased chance of avalanche on Mt. Vitosha. The announcement follows recent heavy snowfall and strong winds which has caused snow to accumulate into the negative forms of the mountain, creating dangerous conditions. All U.S. citizens are advised to monitor mountain conditions and heed local warnings before hiking or skiing on Mt. Vitosha.
