A backcountry snowboarder killed in an avalanche in the San Juan Mountains on Monday marks Colorado’s first avalanche fatality of the season. Dr. Peter Harrelson, 67, was caught in an avalanche in Waterfall Creek near the town of Ophir, which is 12 miles south of Telluride in San Miguel County, according to the San Miguel County Sheriff’s Office. Harrelson was a long-time resident of Ophir. Harrelson’s friends reported him overdue on Monday night and followed his tracks but were unable to find him, according to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center.

PHILIPSBURG, Montana— A snowmobiler was flown to an area hospital after being injured in a Saturday avalanche in Granite County. The slide was triggered Saturday morning near Twin Peaks, which is northeast of Georgetown Lake. Granite County Sheriff Scott Dunkerson said no other information is available at this time.

MISSOULA, Mont. — On Monday, the local US Forest Service released a final report on a Jan. 11 avalanche in the Lone Peak drainage, near Steven's Peak in the Bitterroot, that injured one skier and killed another.
