Afghanistan struck by unseasonal avalanche, killing 6

An avalanche has killed at least six people and trapped 30 more in the eastern Afghan province of Nuristan, a provincial official said on Monday, February 19, after swaths of the country saw heavy snowfall. "It is still snowing. Rescue efforts are under way and the number of dead may increase," provincial head of information and culture Jamiullah Hashimi told AFP. The avalanche swept through the village of Nakre in the Tatin valley of Nuristan overnight on Sunday, blanketing homes in snow and rubble. Around 20 houses were destroyed or heavily damaged, Hashimi added.

Injured skier rescued from avalanche near Essex, MT

A skier was air-lifted from backcountry terrain near Essex on Saturday after they were seriously injured in a large avalanche set off by their partner from the slopes above.

The Two Bear Air rescue helicopter extracted the partially-buried skier, who was swept by the avalanche more than 50 yards though a group of trees. Two Bear crews met the ALERT air ambulance at Hungry Horse Reservoir, and the skier was later hospitalized at Logan Health Medical Center in Kalispell with serious injuries.

Large (D4) Avalanche on Mt Shasta

MOUNT SHASTA, Cal. - The Mount Shasta Avalanche Center discovered Wednesday a very large natural avalanche that is estimated to have happened earlier in the week on Monday during one of the recent, strong winter storms. The avalanche was rated a D4 , which on the D-scale that assesses the destructive power of an avalanche, this avalanche on President's Day would've been capable of destroying a railway car, large truck, several buildings or substantial amount of forest. The Mount Shasta Avalanche Center said nobody was caught in the slide and no roads or infrastructure were compromised on the mountain.
