The Carbon County WY Sheriff has applied for a $295,000 grant from the Wyoming Department of Recreation to create an avalanche forecasting station for the Snowy and Sierra Madre Mountain Ranges. This would be supplemented with donations. The money will pay for equipment and two certified forecasters for three years. He has been working with the U.S. Forest Service (which presumably would provide the service but not fund it themselves).
According to Wyoming law, every sheriff is responsible for coordinating search and rescue operations in their respective counties. Carbon County Sheriff Alex Bakken has been pushing for better avalanche preparedness following the February 8th avalanche death of Saratoga council member Jacob Fluty.

One of these avalanches which buried a person, who survived, is now in the Avalanche Center incidents archive.
At least ten avalanches from March 28 to April 3 were caused by human activity, according to the Iceland Meteorological Office. In every case they were caused by skiers or snowmobile riders. No serious injuries occurred, but in four of the cases people were caught or buried in the avalanche.

Week two of the 2024 North Cascades spring clearing work was a productive one. The eastside crew started the week in the Cutthroat paths (milepost 165) and the D8 dozer, excavator and blower pushed west through nearly all the Liberty Bell avalanche paths this week. The crew is aiming to reach the summit of Washington Pass next week.

Just since the last big snowfall in Chaffee County, there have been three avalanches in Chaffee County along our county roadways. One of the more dramatic avalanches occurred between 5:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. on Sunday morning, April 7, on CR 162 up Chalk Creek Canyon, in the area known as the Cascades. The timing, early morning and on a Sunday, was fortuitous from a traffic standpoint.
