A GLASGOW woman has told how she cheated death after being submerged by an avalanche while climbing in the Scottish Highlands. Maddie Owen was left clinging to the side of Cairngorm Mountain while surrounded by snow for four hours until rescuers traced her and came to her aid. The 24-year-old and her climbing partner were swept almost 90 metres down the rockface after an innocent move on their ascent trigged the terrifying event.
Maddie says the pair know they owe their lives to the rescuers who put their own safety on the line. To raise funds for the Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team who came to her aid during the incident in December, she is pulling on her trainers to take part in the Loch Ness marathon. She said: “It took a couple of months to really get to grips with what we went through. Running has helped me cope mentally and this will be my first ever marathon. I’m hoping to complete the race in four hours while raising money for this great cause.

Pieps, a brand that Black Diamond purchased in 2012 for $10.4 million, has released the Pieps Pro IPS just in time for ice and ski season. It comes in at $530 USD. While other beacons, such as the Back Country Access Tracker S Beacon cost less, the Pieps Pro IPS has enough new features that we (Gripped Magazine) feel it justifies the price tag.
[Quoted From Black Daimond - ] After more than four years of development, the PIEPS Pro IPS Beacon is setting a new standard. Featuring an innovative Interference Protection System (IPS), it compensates for the influence of electronic and metallic interference to the transmitting device by analyzing and adapting to the interfering source. The beacon’s Dual Antenna Signal Processing allows the PIEPS PRO IPS to process the signal simultaneously on the X and Y antenna, which is another unique innovation. It also has a powerful 80-meter search strip width, and is Bluetooth compatible with the PIEPS app, truly making it a next generation avalanche.
[Note: Avalanche-Center.org carries Black Diamond products and sales help partially fund the project. We can make special arrangements with members only. Contact us at store@csac.org]
