Auction - "Dutch" Items
Dutch Aution Items
The Dutch Auction feature applies when there are more than one of the same
item. The bidding page should indicate how many there are. You can bid the same amount as the current high bid until the number of
bids for that amount equals the number of items available. Then you will
need to increase your bid.
When a dutch auction closes the highest bidders get the items. If there
are more winning bids than items the earliest ones win.
So if there are three widgets and three people bid $2 each then somebody
bids $3 the high bidder would get one and the first (earliest) two $2 bids would
each get one.
We upgraded to the latest (and last) version of the auction program in the fifth annual auction (2002) and
the dutch feature appears to be working as described above since then. It should
notify all winning bidders by e-mail but if it doesn't then we will contact
you.
On auctions for a single item there is e-mail notification when you are outbid. In a
dutch auction we are not sure at the moment what the script does about notifying previous
bidders. So check back to make sure you have not been outbid, remembering that in a tie
the earliest bids win.
Proxy Bidding
Proxy bidding on dutch auctions ran into significant and tricky problems and has been disabled. So while you can use
Proxy bids on non-Dutch auctions you cannot do it on Dutch auctions.
